Caught in the Smex Beam

I think it is fair to say that in PNR/UF novels, there are a few things that are expected and accepted:

  1. The hero will be gorgeous and well hung.
  2. The heroine will be attractive, smart, perhaps funny, but most of all likeable and relatable to the reader.
  3. The story will have elements that drag us in, besides the two pretty people it centers on, and transport us to another reality.
  4. The hero and heroine will be irrevocably caught in the Smex Beam.

“What exactly is a Smex Beam, Captain?” you ask.  Ha ha, fear not reader.  Your Captain is here to offer guidance and instruction.

The Smex Beam is the magic that exists the first time our fated lovers meet and never lets go.  They may be engaged in a fight to the death (perhaps with each other), they may be walking down the street contemplating quantum physics, they could even be falling out of a dressing room while trying on too tight jeans.  The point, young paduan, is that when it hits, the Smex Beam obliterates everything else.

Suddenly, there is no one else on the planet that holds any interest for our couple. No matter how much they may fight it, no matter the obstacles, which can include and are not limited to: zombies, vampires, werewolves, assorted fey creatures, car accidents, gun battles, psychic attack, old lovers, fear of commitment, fear of her mother, fear of his mother, paralysis, demons, magic spells gone wrong, angry gods/goddesses, being sucked into another dimension, differences in species, ancient prophecies…….

It. just.doesn’t. matter.  The Smex Beam conquers all.

When you are in its sights, there is no escape. Cupid wishes his arrows worked this well.   Star Trek’s tractor beam? Heh! Old news, old tech.  Captain Kirk wishes he could have had this on the Enterprise. (As if the guy wasn’t already busy enough with all those hot alien chicks.  Just sayin’.)

We readers love it. Every tension-filled scintillating moment, every hungry look and heat-filled glance at our hero’s amazing pack – ahem- pecs,  every time one or the other tries to escape its clutches, we come screaming back for more.  It helps drive the story and plot arc, keeps us turning pages at a break neck pace, reading until our eyes burn and our chin is resting on our chests.  We have to know, will they make it out together?  Will our couple realize their amazing gift of love and unending lust as bestowed by the Smex Beam?

But of course!  This is romance, silly!  The Smex Beam doesn’t make mistakes, and while occasionally we may think someone has managed to slip its sticky tentacles and go running down the side of a ravine, they are always dragged back, lamenting their own stupidity.

What, you want evidence?  Examples, you say, of these lusty lovers caught in the inescapable clutches of true love and exceedingly good sex?  No problem, here’s a little list of my favorites:

1) Edward and Bella, the Twilight Saga.   Sure, he’s a hundred something year old vampire who reads minds, eats mountain lions, and is condemned to high school hell for eternity.  She’s the clumsy, too perfect daughter of the town sheriff with blood that smells so delectable Edward can’t stop obsessing over how he’s NOT going to eat her.  He runs off to Italy to try to save her soul, she jumps off a cliff and hangs with his sworn enemies, a bunch of stinky dog smelling  shape shifters.  His skin may be freezing cold, but that doesn’t stop them from gettin’ down and dirty in the ocean off a little island named after Edward’s pseudo-mom.  With marriage comes a baby who doesn’t need a carriage but an iron crib and a newly transformed wife who won’t ever die and doesn’t need sleep.  What do they do with all that free time at night?  Hmm, let me think…..

2) Cat and Bones, the Night Huntress Series.  Cat’s an uber hot red head born to a mom convinced her half breed daughter is mostly evil.  Bones is a two hundred plus year old vamp that spent his human years earning his keep on top of, under, next to, well, just inside a bunch of aristocratic British bitches before he got shipped to a penal colony for putting his hands where they didn’t belong.  Add some silver knives, sexual tension you can’t cut with a Sawz-All, a smokin’ hot hero who is incredibly open with his feelings, a sexually repressed heroine you just love to root for, witty banter and action sequences so slick and tight your heart beats almost as hard as during the sex scenes, and it just can’t be denied that these two are definitely in the direct path of the S.B.

3) Clay and Elena, Women of the Otherworld.  Clay is the Enforcer of the North American Pack, Elena is his lady love, mate and wife.  These two had such a strange and rocky start to their story with Elena taking off and Clayton quietly stalking her from afar (the issues are heavy and myriad, both had difficult childhoods – actually that may underplay it, but you’ll have to read the books if you want to know) that the angst was almost unbearable.  Clay is no angel, and a reader can’t help but understand his lady love’s anger and bad attitude, but his single minded determination and focus are in the end some of his best qualities. Well, that and his unswerving devotion to tough as nails Elena.  Clay is so physically attractive as to be almost unbelievable, but he has eyes only for Elena, no slouch in the looks department herself.  Last I checked in with these two, they were living the PNR/UF dream with minimal death threats, a healthy pack and great sex life.

4) Mercy Thompson and Adam Hauptman, Mercy Thompson Series.  This series is more urban fantasy that paranormal romance, but I beg you to give it a look-see.  There is sex, yes, but it is not graphic and the romance is not the main arc of the plot, but it is so well written and paced that you’re rooting for these two from book one.  Mercy is a shape shifting coyote, Adam is the super powerful and incredibly sexy alpha of the Columbia Basin Pack.  These two engage is some really funny contests of wills that involve, among other things, a cat named Medea, a broken down Volkswagen Rabbit, and pancakes.  Mercy tries to consciously run from Adam while her subconscious is just pulling her in closer all the time courtesy of the Smex Beam.  She may be dodging rogue spells cast by angry Fey, trying not be a vampire snack and confused (at first) by her feelings for her first love Sam, but she is inevitably and quite happily conquered by the unstoppable force of the Beam and the drowning chocolate brown of a certain alpha werewolf’s eyes. (The bod attached to those eyes is certainly a bonus….)

5) The hellren and shellans of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.  A series that is running strong nine (or is it ten?) books in, a girl can’t stop rooting for these couples.  The danger, the sex, the passion of a mated male, the sex, the unswerving devotion in the face of danger, the sex, the shit kicker boots and leather, the sex……

These guys and gals overcome bodily injury and constant peril to be together.  They battle their sworn enemies the lessers, train endlessly, fight personal demons, and fight obstacles that seem insurmountable to be together.  What other explanation could there be than the Smex Beam?  Who would go through the nonsense that the universe throws at these people for nothing but a good lay?  No, there is more at work here to cause the levels of love, devotion, respect, and downright horniness these people feel for each other.

“But Captain”, you ask, “just where did the Smex Beam come from? Who, in all their infinite wisdom and intelligence invented the Smex Beam?”

That, dear reader is a topic for another post.  I will however, give you her initials.

G.O.E.

Bones vs Kate Daniels smacktalk & a Jeaniene Frost ARC charity auction

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks (and hey, I’m guilty of that occasionally *wink*), you know about the recent devastating tornadoes in our southern states.  With so many families affected and in need of aid, Night Huntress series author Jeaniene Frost has put up a triple book pack for auction on her blog, and will match any winning bid up to $500.  The lucky winning bidder will make their donation directly to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and will then receive the following signed books in the mail…

Eagle-eyed Night Huntress fans will notice that One Grave at a Time is an ARC (advanced reader copy) since it will not be released until August 30th of this year.  Technically Magic Slays is also an ARC, but since it releases tomorrow (May 31st), the winning bidder won’t receive it until after it is publicly available.  Ms. Frost did state that there will be other opportunities to win an ARC of OGaaT on her blog, so don’t fret too much if you can’t beat the already-impressive high bid of $425.  If, however, you do have some extra cash to throw around or just REALLY want to get your hands on that new Cat & Bones book, head over to Jeaniene Frost’s blog and make your bid before 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday, May 31st (tomorrow!).  Be sure to read the rules before bidding.  Click here to check it out, and kudos to Jeaniene Frost, Ilona Andrews, and Meljean Brook for their generosity!

Speaking of Cat & Bones, if you’ve been following the Vampire Book Club’s 2011 Alpha Showdown, you know that poor Bones had to defeat the love of his life, Cat, in order to progress to the third tournament bracket… just to lose to Jace Wayland of the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare (note to self: must check out book 1 of that series and find out who Jace is – he must be pretty awesome to have beat Bones!).  Kate Daniels won her round against Raphael of the Guild series by Nalini Singh (uh, how?! He’s an ARCHANGEL!  Seriously people…) and will now be facing off against Jericho Barrons of the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning.  Speculation is dim for Kate to take that victory, and since Jeaniene and Ilona Andrews didn’t think their two characters would end up facing off, they engaged in a little smack talk instead.  From Ms. Frost’s blog, here’s the dialog between Bones and Kate. Enjoy!

Bones: I will beat you because am tough but inwardly vulnerable since I spent the last two hundred years whoring and killing to fill the emptiness inside.
Kate: I am tough but inwardly vulnerable, too! And I will kick your ass because I was born with a secret power that made me a loner, and don’t even get me started on my pent-up rage over my daddy issues.
Bones: Secret powers and daddy issues don’t scare me. You just described my wife.
Kate: Dude, I make spikes out of my blood.  Also I have a magic sword that eats vampire flesh.
Bones: So do I, and it’s in my pants. Haven’t you heard about Chapter 32?
Kate: What’s Chapter 32?
Bones: Ask Curran to show you.
Kate: What does any of this have to do with us fighting to the death?
Bones: It means I can launch a sneak attack from the front OR back!
Kate:  Oh, you want cheesy word play? Fine, I will defeat you with my overused phrases.  Why me, dear God, slabbed with muscle, Your Furriness, aha.
Bones: Bollocks, bloody hell,  luv, pet–
Kate: – You forgot Kitten.
Bones: –thrust deep, thrust deep, thrust deep –
Kate: More Chapter 32 again?
Bones: No, I have to do this in every book. Seems I shag as though I’m drilling for crude oil.

Fangtastic Friday: The Alpha Showdown is ON! Bones & Cat go fang-to-fang!

I came across this great review blog last week via Facebook and LOVE the Alpha Showdown idea!  The Vampire Book Club has set up a tournament bracket, pitting some of our favorite heroes and heroines of paranormal romance & urban fantasy against each other.  The contest is billed as an “alpha” showdown, implying it’s about strength of leadership but it’s feeling more like a “who could kick whose ass in a fight” sort of thing.  Really either way is fun, so no complaint here!  In the first two showdowns, one of my personal favorite paranormal romance couples, the Night Huntress series’ Cat & Bones, won their respective matches and are moving on to the next round… to fight EACH OTHER!  *gasp*

Soooooo, this is either some really bad bracket seeding or a nice ironic jab at the power couple.  Now there’s a tough choice for voters: powerful, sexy, badass, dirty-fighting Bones or his one-of-a-kind vampire-blood-drinking mate, whom he trained personally.  My first instinct is “Bones, hands down”.  He’s got at least a century on Cat, extra strength and abilities, and knows all her weaknesses.  That said, she knows all of his weaknesses too, and she tops his list of “people I’d rather die for than sneeze at”.  She also could drain him of all his blood and absorb some of his powers… if she could hold him down long enough.  Mmmm, toss -up.

Now, that said, this is the showdown doesn’t necessarily have to involve fighting.  When it comes to straight leadership, it’s still a tight race, with both of them having headed up separate successful and powerful organizations, but I think the scales tip a little to Bones on that front.  She does allow him to dominate her though (well, moreso than the other way around at least), and that’s what being “alpha” is about – convincing others to accept you as their leader, whether through fighting, love,  loyalty, or manipulation.  Who will win?  You’ll have to check back and see!

Other notable match-ups are…

  • Anita Blake vs Eugenie Markham
  • Zsadist vs Curran (I’d have rather seen Vishous here! /pout)
  • Eric Northman vs Raphael (this one should be interesting)
To follow the action, check out The Vampire Book Club and cast your vote!  The competition bracket is below, if you want a sneak peek…

Cat & Bones One Grave at a Time Cover Art Released!

For all you Cat & Bones fans fiending for your next OGaaT (One Grave at a Time – Night Huntress book #6) tease, Ms. Frost has given us a sneak peek at the cover and stepback art for the upcoming novel.  The model for Cat has changed, as she’s no longer posing for book covers, but on the bright side, Cat finally gets to let her hair down!  Check ’em out below…

(That’s her cat Helsing above, which is appropriate since the book releases close to Halloween this year.  Check out Bones below… I miss his shock-bleached hair! 😉 )

Enjoy!

Review: One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress series #2), by Jeaniene Frost

TLDR recap:

This second novel in the Cat & Bones series is packed with even more action, romance, and plot twists than the first!  The storyline moves swiftly and skillfully, keeping readers’ attention riveted to the pages.  The fighting is fierce, the sex is steamy, and the plot continues to bring on the surprises.  Do yourself a favor and add this one to your “must read” list!

  • Title: One Foot in the Grave
  • Series: The Night Huntress (Cat & Bones) series – book #2
  • Author: Jeaniene Frost
  • Recommended reader age: 17+
  • Sexual content level: Moderate

Premise:

After a painful 4-year forced separation from the love of her life, Cat finds herself once again face to face with Bones… the vampire who taught her everything she knows about loving, fighting, and life as an undead.  The Red Reaper has a price on her head now, and Bones is back to make sure it stays in one piece, literally.  Cat must decide whether to accept him fully back into her life (and bed) or continue trying to keep in at arm’s length as they fight side-by-side to defeat new enemies and defuse clever new traps.

Thoughts:

In Ms. Frost’s second Night Huntress novel, we get to meet Ian, Bones’s vampire sire and good friend since they were both humans.  Spade is also back, briefly, and we get a glimpse of the mysterious Mencheres, who we’ll get more info on later in the series.  Now that Cat’s team of special ops vampire killers is up and running, we get to meet some great new characters who will pop up here and there in the rest of the series, and we learn more about vampire society and Cat’s heritage as a half-breed.

The plot of this book moves a lot like Cat & Bones both do – quick and to the point, with a dramatic flair.  Even the beginning chapters, before Cat sees Bones again, the story is enjoyable and spirited.  Ms. Frost is smart in making her heroine and hero strong and like-able on their own, without needing to be constantly paired up in order to drive the plot.

I don’t want to say much more because there are some really fun plot twists in this story and I’d hate to spoil them.  *wink*  HOWEVER, I will say this… DO NOT SKIP CHAPTER 32!!  You’ve probably noticed that I’m writing this review after the review for C&B #5 that just recently released.  I decided to go back and re-read the first books and write reviews on them for any potential readers new to the series.  Chapter 32 of One Foot in the Grave has become one of Jeaniene Frost’s most well-known passages.  It’s sexy, ballsy, and pushes the boundaries of what we have come to expect in contemporary romance scenes, without (in my opinion) being too over-the-top or unbelievable (okay, respectively – he IS still a vampire!).  If for no other reason than to read this chapter, you absolutely MUST MUST MUST read Halfway to the Grave (Cat & Bones #1) and then this one!  After that, I’m certain you’ll be just as excited about these books as I am… and the legions of Jeaniene Frost fans out there!!

You might also like…

If you like Cat & Bones (Night Huntress series), you might also like the Cassandra Palmer Pythia series by Karen Chance or the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward.  The Southern Vampire (Sookie Stackhouse) series by Charlaine Harris is also somewhat similar in its early books, but becomes too politically mired in the later ones to keep up the fast pace that the Night Huntress series is known for.

The Cassie Palmer books are a crazy-fun trip through chaos, danger, time-travel, & vamp/mage politics, with a little romance on the side.  If Cat & Bones are your favorite couple, you’ll probably also like Cassie/Mircea/Pritkin (yeah I know that sounds weird- read it and you’ll see what I mean!) and several of the Black Dagger Brotherhood pairings.

Memorable quotes:

There aren’t many one-liners in this book, and it’s difficult to pull out sections of the in-between-action scenes without giving away parts of the plot, so I don’t have as many quotes for you this time…

You won’t like him when he’s angry…

Grendel wasn’t in as jolly a mood.  He got to his feet, rubbed his throat where the skin was healing back into place, and gave me a very unpleasant look.

“You will pay with pain for that.”

What was I supposed to say?  It wasn’t good for me, either?

Paying your respects…

(Bones) “Congratulations on a magnificent display of unsportsmanlike conduct.  What a dirty fighter you are.  Somebody really skilled must have trained you.”

I laughed even though it hurt.  “Yeah.  An arrogant bastard.”

Final thoughts:

I enjoy all of the Night Huntress series books, including the expanded world ones (Spade & Mencheres), but One Foot in the Grave is one of my favorites… not just of this series, but of all the books I’ve read in general.  This one and the next two have a really dynamic chemistry to the characters and story arc that just draws you in and keeps you there.  I can go for days at a time with my nose in these books, completely forgetting about everything else (which really annoys my husband! hah).  This series is quite distracting!

Cat & Bones are one of my absolute favorite couples in paranormal romance (or any romance, really).  I don’t know if it’s her independence and temerity, his confidence and charm, the fact that they’re both kick-ass fighters, or the combustible sparks between them, but something about this chemistry is just RIGHT.  READ THIS SERIES!!

Rating:
4.75 fangs: BITE IT!

It’s really tempting to give this one 5 fangs, and I’m still not sure it doesn’t deserve a full 5!

Review: This Side of the Grave (Night Huntress series #5) by Jeaniene Frost

TLDR recap:

Jeaniene Frost’s latest offering in the Night Huntress paranormal romance series (more affectionately known as Cat & Bones) gets the whole gang back together as they try to defuse some very nasty political violence & insidious rumormongoring, and prevent an all-out  vamps vs. ghouls undead civil war.  This novel has everything fans of the Night Huntress world have come to love and expect from the series: quick wit, explosive action, a spunky kick-ass heroine (Cat), a strong sexy & deadly leading man (Bones), and Ms. Frost’s trademark unique & inventive passionate Cat & Bones moments.

  • Title: This Side of the Grave
  • Series: The Night Huntress (Cat & Bones) series – book #5 (Night Huntress World-inclusive book #7)
  • Author: Jeaniene Frost
  • Prominent Characters: Cat, Bones, Vlad, Mencheres, Fabian
  • Recommended reader age: 17+
  • Sexual content level: Moderate

Premise:

Even though Cat has been a full vampire for a few months now, Apollyon is still trying to use her as a figurehead to start a bloody war between the vampire and ghoul nations.  Cat, Bones, & crew have to find a way to take out Apollyon without inciting the very war they’re trying to prevent.  Cat also has to deal with her Uncle’s devastating terminal illness and her mother’s newfound aspirations, in addition to leaning to use and perfect some very advanced new powers she’s recently acquired.  With threats coming from all sides, and the passion between Cat & Bones as combustible as ever, our favorite paranormal couple is in for a wild ride.

Thoughts:

One of the things I like most about Cat, aside from being a strong, kick-ass chic with fangs, is that after 5 books (7 if you count the NHWorld books) and 8 years of battles, political standoffs, and hanging around some of the oldest, most powerful creatures on earth, she’s still a little socially awkward.  Her irreverent modern slang dialogue and off-the-cuff reactions make for some unforgettably fun scenes!  I mean, honestly, who can identify with a gal who’s got an unlimited lifespan, a battle-honed figure, frequently gains ridiculously awesome new powers, AND has a gorgeous, talented lover?  She’s got to have something to make her a little more human… ok, maybe not “human” so much as vulnerable… and Ms. Frost has done an excellent job keepin’ it real.  =)

Mencheres, however, isn’t really real… if you know what I mean.  😉  Aside from possessing enough power to support a small nation and having one of the most stoic countenances of any of the NH crew, he’s a freaking ex-Egyptian pharoah!  Cat has been uncomfortable around Mencheres since she first met him, and I have to agree that he’s a little creepy sometimes… in a lovable kind of way, of course.  *wink*  It was really nice to see Mencheres acting a little more loose and normal, and there are a couple of delightful scenes between him and Kira.

Something that did annoy me a little with this book was the frequent repetition of past story details.  Now granted, most readers probably aren’t as intent on story details or focused on (read: obsessed with) re-reading a series before the newest book is released as I am, but still I didn’t feel that the dialogue put in to catch up new readers was really believable from a conversational viewpoint.  If you’ve been through so much with someone over such a long period of time, you generally don’t need to tell each other how you met or how this event or that went down.   It just felt awkward to me.  Instead of having this as dialogue between the characters, I’d have preferred it to be explained as a narration in Cat’s first-person sections.

That said, pretty much everything else about this book was AWESOME!  And Chapter 21… OOOOOOOH MMMMYYYYYYY!!  I’d heard about Chapter 21 before I read this book, so I was expecting it to be memorable (and boy, is it!).  It’s been compared to Chapter 32 of One Foot In the Grave (NH #2), which I’m not going to spoil for those of you who haven’t read it yet, and I have to say that it’s definitely in the same category of did-they-really-just-do-that.  I still think Ch. 32 of OFitG was more fleshed out (no pun intended =D) and extensive, but I really enjoyed Ch. 21 of this one as well.   Ms. Frost has a real talent for writing gripping, passionate love scenes for all sorts of encounters- from the standard steamy stuff, venturing into a little BDSM.

OH!  Did anyone else catch the little by-play with Ian and Veritas?!  I suspect a new Night Huntress World pairing in the making… *grin*  Still no new mentions of Timothy or Cain though.  Oh Jeaniene, you are such a TEASE!

Memorable quotes:

Note: I didn’t put ALL of the fun one-liners in here.  I wanted you guys to have a few things to discover on your own.  Twilight fans, be on the lookout for an easter egg that is NOT mentioned below (although other reviewers have spoiled the goods already, so don’t go reading reviews if you don’t want to know what it is)…

A day in the life of a half-breed vampire dictator…

“But if Apollyon is behind these attacks, we need a way to get to him without looking like we’re being mindlessly antagonistic.  Otherwise…”

Bones didn’t have to finish the sentence.  Otherwise, Apollyon will have more fuel for the rumors that I’m seeking to be some sort of vampiric Stalin, I mentally finished.  Right, because that’s what I put on my To Do list every morning.  Brush teeth.  Wash hair.  Rule undead world with an iron fist.

How not to party-crash a graveyard…

Most people didn’t visit cemetaries for cheery reasons, so it wasn’t a place where striking up impromptu conversations was the norm.  Not to mention it would take a really ballsy person to go up to a group gathered around a gravesite with the opening line of “So what are we talking about, anyway?”

Vlad, on learning new skills…

“Less bitching… more learning,” Vlad grated.  Then he closed his eyes as if dismissing me.  “I know, I’m delicious.  Nummy… nummy,” he muttered to the remnants feasting on him.

Bones, on the Cat’s reunion with a former ghostly acquaintance <altered to avoid spoilers>…

“This is the sod?” Bones started down the porch stairs even as <the ghost> began to edge away.  “Come back here, you scurvy little-”

“Bones, don’t!” I interrupted, not wanting him to start using slurs that might offend the other living-impaireds gathered here.

He stopped, giving a last glare to <the ghost> while mouthing, You. Me. Exorcist, before returning to my side.

Explaining modern weaponry to a 19th century ghost…

“Machine guns?” I asked, miming holding one and making a series of rapid staccato noises.

Bones’s mouth twitched, but he dipped his head so I wouldn’t see his clear amusement over my “GI Jane does Pictionary” imitation.

Final thoughts:

Cat has finally come to terms with who and what she is, and has publicly accepted it.  She’s come full circle from the girl we first met in Halfway to the Grave… from hating & killing vampires, to eating them and marrying one.  This time around it’s her turn to listen to her friends and family spout the same excuses and “human” rhetoric that she used to shove at Bones.  She’s finally starting to understand the frustration she’s put him through and the deep well of patience and faith in her that he’s always had.  I do love a heroine who can be sensitive and vulnerable while still kicking ass and taking names!

With the threat of Apollyon gone, having been the looming Big Bad for the last few books, it will be interesting to see what Ms. Frost throws at our favorite paranormal couple next.  I hope she takes the track of “new and different” as opposed to “bigger and badder”… the former will keep the series fresh and fun while the latter would, I fear, hasten it to an early grave.

Cat & Bones are a powerhouse… as a couple, as a fighting team, and as leaders of their extensive undead “family” line.  Oh, and don’t miss the preview excerpt from the next Cat & Bones book (One Grave at a Time) at the end of this one.  “Fall 2011” is a long time to wait for the next installment, and I can’t wait!

Rating:
4.25 fangs: BITE IT!

This novel was almost all I wanted it to be, and that’s some pretty high expectations to live up to!  The action is a little slow in parts, but still enjoyable.  If you haven’t read the first 4 (plus 2 World books, Spade and Mencheres), I’d recommend reading them first, as there’s a ton of history and a fairly large cast of characters brought in at the climax of this story.  Even without reading the other novels, though, this will still be a good read, and you’ll get to see what all the “Cat & Bones” fuss is about.  =)

This Side of the Grave (Cat & Bones #5) book trailer released!

Jeaniene Frost, author of the wildly popular (and ridiculously awesome!) Night Huntress paranormal romance series (also known as “Cat & Bones”), released the trailer for her newest book, “This Side of the Grave”, today. Holy O+ Batman, could I have possibly convoluted that sentence more?!  (Probably. HAH!)

I know I know, hold your horses ladies.  I’m embedding the trailer below so we can all watch it together!  Sheesh.  However, for anyone who has not seen a “book trailer” before and is confused about how this works (there’s no video, right?), it’s basically just a collection of images, text, and music all animated together.  They aren’t as BAM! or POW! as say a Harry Potter movie trailer or *swoon* the preview for the first half of Breaking Dawn, but they are a fun way to see a summary of  the book’s back cover.  Without further ado, here’s the trailer for the much anticipated Cat & Bones #5…

Woah, what’s this about Cat going “deeper into the grave”?  Are we talking human/vampire/ghoul hybrid?!  Damn it, now I want to read it even more than I did before (and that was already A LOT)!  Oh the agonizing wait until February 22….

Pssst! You can click the banner at the top of this post for a link to Ms. Frost’s trailer announcement on her website. =)

Preview of Cat & Bones #5, This Side of the Grave

I know, I JUST posted about Cat & Bones!  Ms. Frost knows how to captivate an audience, and I had to share this tidbit I just found in my reader…

If you want to read the first 20% of the new Cat & Bones book, This Side of the Grave, click here! Apparently this had previously been posted but with a spoiler to later events in the book and Ms. Frost has corrected the error.

If you want to hear Ms. Frost talk about Cat & Bones and the new book, go here and listen to the “Frostcast”!

Ok, I promise to try to behave and talk about something else… * mischievous grin*  I will be doing some Cat & Bones reviews before the release of This Side of the Grave, so if you haven’t read the books and want to know what all the fuss is about, stay tuned!  =)
